Introduction: Welcome to the home of the South Kingstown Rebels! South Kingstown High School is a public high school, more widely known as "SKHS" or "SK" is located in the village of Wakefield which is inside of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. This school is in a rural area but is right outside of Main Street, the center of town, and the beautiful beaches that surround most of Rhode Island's coast. This school is takes pride in it's sports teams, special events, and unique qualities. SK's students wear their navy blue and white school colors with the logo reading "South" proudly. They enjoy a near-by bowling alley used for various activities such as gym class, a newly built greenhouse, nearly professional talent shows, and much more. Many parents of South Kingstown students actually attended the school themselves and take great pride in sending their children there. South Kingstown High School provides a learning environment for grade levels 9 through 12. The high school also has a credible Special Education program. There are currently 1,085 students enrolled in the school with 124 teachers. South Kingstown has a 1:9 teacher to student ratio. The following context statement will provide curious parents, students, or teachers about South Kingstown High School with details about the community, the school itself, and comparisons to statewide statistics.
Community Background: South Kingstown is a rural area that contains a mixture of farm lands, small shopping centers, and gorgeous coastlines. The diverse popuation in S.K. makes for a melting pot of all cultures. There is a strong sense of Native American pride throughout the town which helps remind residents what S.K. began as. Although many different types of people are present in South Kingstown, the majority of the population attending public schools in the South Kingstown district are white.
This table and pie chart better exempliy the ethnicity in the school district: (taken from "The Public/Charter Schools Dashboard" webpage) Students by Race and Ethnicity2010-2011RI - South Kingstown Public Schools
Exploring the Ethnicity of SKHS... As the chart explains, almost 90% of high school students at South Kingstown are white and according to the US Census 90.9% of people in South Kingstown in general. This is a high number compared to the total population of 81.4% of white people in the whole population of Rhode Island. The next largest population in the school, community, and Rhode Island as a whole is hispanic. Although it is the next largest population, it is not close to the percentage of white people living in Rhode Island with 3.0% in the school, 2.7% in the community, and 12.4% in Rhode Island. Another larger portion of ethnicty that makes up SKHS's population is the Native American one. Native American's make up 2.9% of the community. This is no surprise when you analyze the history of tribes such as the Narragansett Indians that first inhabited Rhode Island's coast. Next on the population list is African Americans which makes up 2.2% of the schools population, 2.2% of the community, and 5.7 of Rhode Island's population. The Asian population has 1.8% of the school's population, 2.7% of the community, and 2.9% of the state's population. From this data it is obvious that the population of SK and it's school consists of a large majority of white population followed by the Hispanic population, then the African American population followed by Native American, and then Asian population.
Wondering about the Economic Characterists? South Kingstown lies on the higher spectrum of median household income when compared to Rhode Island's statistics as a whole. The medium household income was last collected accurately in the year 2000. It was $56,325 compared to the state's median at $42,090. The median family income of South Kingstown is $67,912 which is larger than the state's of $52,781. South Kingstown is home to about 199 families under poverty level which is about 3.1%. Rhode island as a whole is home to 8.9% of families under poverty level (the inference can be made that this numbers have increases since the resession). The number of individuals under poverty level is a bit higher in SK with a percentage of 5.3% but even higher throughout Rhode Island at 11.9%. From this numbers it is evident that South Kingstown has some poverty but does remain in better economic shape than Rhode Island as a whole.
Extra Important Information Based on the 2000 US Census again, the child population of South Kingstown is 6,284 (statewide - 247,822). The percentage of children living in single-parent familes is 19% (statewide- 30%). Children living in familes below the federal poverty level in the town is 5.3% (statewide -16.9%). The number of teens not working and not in school is 0.5% (7.3% statewide) which is a positive number. Households with grandparents taking care of grandchildren finacially is at 3% (4% statewide). South Kingstown Rhode Island continues to keep percentages lower than statewide averages.
Datacenter.kidscount.org offers a more recent graph of single-parent families across the US. If you would like to compare data throughout states visit their website. Below you can see a portion of the chart that shows that Rhode Island as a whole is now at 37%.
District Summary: To figure out where South Kingstown stands in the state with district statistics. It will be compared to the most quailified school in the state Barrington, and the lowest achieving school in the State- Central Falls. When we assess most of this data, it is easy to see that South Kingstown is much closer to Barrington than Central falls. SK is set up a lot like Barrington and has very similar Demographics which helps us to connect why their test scores and ratios may be alike and not very much alike Central Falls.
The NECAP math score better exemplifies where SK stands with test scores in the state:
Subsidized lunch is offered to students at public schools to finacially support any child that is eligible. Students may recieve free or reduced lunch in this case. This cart also compares South Kingstown High to a low income school and a high income school to show where they stand on the subsidized lunch spectrum. The average statewide number is also included.
South Kingstown's student to teacher ratio is currently 1 teacher to 9 students (1:9). The statewide ratio of student to teacher is 1:11. SK provides a very close learning environment where students can definetly find any type of help they are looking for. Teachers are willing to stay after school for extra help sessions and ready to recommend ways to help students improve in their classes. The amount of teachers who are Emergency Certified is less than 1%. This ensures that almost every single teacher in SK is fully qualified to be educating the students in their specialized subject. Students have a close relationship with teachers
(Students in their advisory bond with their advisor. Advisory is a place where a teacher offers help in any way they can to a student whether it be advice or help on homework. It is a positive down time for student to recollect themselves during the day.) SK rises above state averages in each of the 3 portions of the SAT test. Here are the exact number for this past year's averages. South Kingstown shows an above average performance on the test that is important for most students to assess their abilities and get into the college of their choice.
Analysis:South Kingstown is located in an area the complete opposite of Central Falls. South Kingstown is rural and Central Falls is an urban school district. To further analyze the environment of South Kingstown High school is to play close attention to it's attendence and graudations rates. In the 2009-2010 school year SK had an attendence rate of 93% a bit higher than Central Fall's 88%. South Kingstown has a chronic absenteeism rate of 10% while Central Falls has a rate of 27%, doubling over South Kingstown. The current graduation rate within four years at South Kingstown High School is 85.6% while Central Falls is at 50.6%. The current drop out rate is 6.4% at SK while the rate at Central is 34.5%. As you can infer, the location of SKHS and the demographics play a large role in the high and positve statistics presented. There is a correlation between how many students recieve subsidized lunches, attendence rates, test scores and graduation rates. Central Falls has 11% of students receiving Bilingual Education Services while South Kingstown has less than 1% in need of those services. South Kingstown has more of the same type of ethnicity population and is less diverse than Central falls which makes the learning environment and student have much common ground. Pie Charts : 2009-2010 Results for Graduation Rate and Drop Out Rate
South Kingstown is a particularly safe school environment. Most suspensions derive from students cutting class, or leaving the school grounds. As you can see from the chart presented below, SK makes up a pretty small percentage out of the whole state for suspensions enough though it is a larger high school.
(taken from InfoWorks LIVE!)There is a very low rate of out of school suspensions but a bit higher one for in-school. In school suspension keeps students more on track by having a supervisor ensure that work is completed throughout the day for each class. To better exemplify SKHS's stability their funding and resources can be compared to an under privlaged school such as the dsitrict where Central Falls High School is located:
SKHS District(InfoWorks LIVE!) Central Falls District(InfoWorks LIVE!) If you pay close attention to the district property value per student, Central Falls is significantly much lower than South Kingstown's. SKHS also has a higher district per pupil expenditure and a much higher Median Family Income. South Kingstown has a bit more resources than this urban school district. Students have a lot of resources to work with at SKHS whether it is school supplies or athletic equipment. The funding avaible to SKHS students allows many privlages and opportunites such as career fairs, musical preformances, and great tutors.
Conclusion: South Kingstown High School is full of life. Teachers are willing to build great relationships with students and parents while keeping the importance of grades, hard work, and moving on to a higher education in mind. It is not only a beautiful place to live near amazing beaches, but you can be sure to receive a quailty education here. Learning will be a positive experience here at South Kingstown High School where there is so much to offer.
Students help clean up the local neighborhood on "Clean Up Day" by gardening, picking up trash, painting, and much more.
A play is held every year where students are able to mock teachers in a harmless, funny way. Each student resembles a different teacher. It is a great fundraiser for each class to put towards Prom and the senior trip.
This video link shows South Kingstown's Rebel Cafe in action! The Rebel Cafe allows students with special needs to walk around the school during Advisory and sell snacks to any interested students. This program has brought all students from the school together and developed a great sense of community at SKHS! ENJOY:

The funding avaible to SKHS students allows many privlages and opportunites such as career fairs, musical preformances, and great tutors.
Conclusion:
South Kingstown High School is full of life.
Students help clean up the local neighborhood on
"Clean Up Day" by gardening, picking up trash,
painting, and much more.
A play is held every year where students are able to mock teachers
in a harmless, funny way.
ENJOY:
